S-Ray Inc. announces first licensing agreement with Dental GPS

S-Ray Inc. has announced its first licensing agreement. The license, granted to Dental GPS, allows for worldwide use of S-Ray Incorporated's Ultrasound Digital Impression System (UDIS).

The UDIS, part of a full-mouth "smile design" system, digitally maps a patient's entire dental anatomy, increasing accuracy and readability of the resulting image. UDIS's digital imaging reduces time, labor, and material costs by rendering conventional dental impression materials and stone casts obsolete.

"Though we plan to attach the UDIS to equipment such as CAD/CAM systems, Dental GPS is an ideal partner for our portable iPhone form factor device," said Steve Baird, chief executive officer of S-Ray Inc. "This is another example of how moving digital dentistry into the Cloud increases portability and rapid case acceptance while lowering costs."

Henry Schein Cares® Foundation recently announced that its Board of Directors had awarded a $20,000 challenge grant to Oral Health America (OHA). The Foundation at Henry Schein Inc. is committed to "helping health happen" through its global social responsibility program.

Acknowledging the generous gift in a letter to the Foundation's executive director Alan Cohen, Oral Health America's president and chief executive officer Beth Truett stated, "Our friends at Henry Schein know as well as anyone that more than 10,000 ‘Baby Boomers' will reach retirement age every day for the next 19 years, and that while today's older adults are living longer and enjoy better oral health than previous generations, they are particularly susceptible to oral disease and decay as they age and face chronic and systemic health issues.

"For this reason, OHA intends to steer the proceeds of this grant towards its signature programs such as the Wisdom Tooth Project, an effort OHA is pioneering as an effort to connect, educate, and advocate for the oral health of all older Americans, especially those most vulnerable."

The partnership with Ultradent is the result of careful consideration. The greatest emphasis was finding a partner that could maintain the type of service Triodent has provided to date.

"In the end," Dr. McDonald added, "Ultradent and its direct business model was preferred because our business philosophies are very similar, as are the aspirations for our customers and business in general."

"We're very excited about our partnership with Triodent," said Dr. Dan Fischer, Ultradent's president and chief executive officer. Safco upgrades refrigeration system

Safco Dental Supply Company recently upgraded to a larger, more energy-efficient refrigeration system to ensure optimal climate controlled product storage. Not only does the new unit help prolong the shelf life of more than 300 different products (three times more than Safco's previous refrigeration units) but it enables warehouse staff to more easily identify products for quicker fulfillment of customer orders.

"Customer satisfaction was the number one driver behind this investment," said Neil Ingram, vice president and general manager of Safco. "Our operations team worked closely with our manufacturer partners to determine which products should ideally be refrigerated while stored in our warehouse. We also teamed with product manufacturers to establish proper operating procedures — including required temperature of the refrigeration unit, and the charting and recording of actual temperature."

Safco then took it one step further, adding special labels to refrigerated products to alert customers that these items were refrigerated at Safco, and that the manufacturer either recommends or suggests that a particular product be refrigerated. Starting in May 2012, Safco's dental supply catalogs and invoices will include clear, concise information identifying all products requiring refrigeration. This will help Safco's customers to better recognize the products they should refrigerate in their offices.

NASCAR helps GKAS kick off 10th year

The American Dental Association's (ADA) Give Kids A Smile program, ADA Foundation, Henry Schein, Inc., and 3M ESPE Dental are teaming up with NASCAR star Greg Biffle again in 2012 to put good oral health on the fast track for young fans of NASCAR.

Across the country, Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will help deliver the message to children about healthy habits like brushing, flossing, visiting the dentist and making smart food choices. Unfortunately for millions of children in this country, these healthy habits aren't a routine practice.

Biffle also took the important oral health message to Richmond International Raceway during the NASCAR weekend in late April for a special Give Kids A Smile dental health screening and education event. A team of sponsors hosted a dental health screening event at the Richmond International Raceway Midway on Friday. Volunteer dentists and other dental team members organized through the Virginia Dental Association provided underserved children free dental evaluations, fluoride treatments and, if needed, dental sealants at this unique event. On Saturday, young fans and their families participated in fun activities and education about healthy dental habits.

In honor of this special oral health program, NASCAR driver Greg Biffle's No. 16 3M car sported a special Give Kids A Smile paint scheme during the 58th Annual Richmond 400 (see below).

"As a parent, you want to do everything you can to protect your children's health and teach them good lifelong habits," Biffle said. "When you consider how much dental health impacts children's ability to learn, self-confidence and overall quality of life, you want to do everything you can to help them be healthy. For children in need, it is even more of a challenge, so we're teaming up again with 3M ESPE Dental, the ADA and Henry Schein to provide education and free screenings and treatments."

The event also is part of the yearlong celebration of the Give Kids A Smile program's 10th anniversary in 2012. Fans can follow Give Kids A Smile on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GiveKidsASmile.
