SmileFusion's Whitening Prophy Paste

SmileFusion recently debuted the world's first and only whitening prophy paste. What makes this product unique is the inclusion of SmileFusion's exclusive technology called Viocin, which is a combination of a patented purple dye and xylitol that whitens while it cleans. The benefits of xylitol are certainly familiar to all of us, but I had never heard of Viocin.

During my sampling and research of this product, I got a physics lesson on complementary colors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Viocin as an advanced teeth-whitening agent based on the principles of physics regarding visible colors. Turns out that complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel. So I borrowed a color wheel from my husband's art desk and the opposite of yellow is purple. So when yellowed or dull teeth are polished with Viocin-infused prophy paste, which is violet in color, the yellow is cancelled out and the teeth appear whiter and brighter. Incidentally, the same science applies in the application of makeup. Red spots can be cancelled out with green-tinted cover up.

SmileFusion also offers toothpaste, oral rinse, and whitening gel for use at home. All of these products are infused with Viocin for whiter teeth immediately after use. According to the manufacturer, continued use of Viocin-infused products provides lasting whitening results. SmileFusion products are alcohol- and fluoride-free; and with the exception of the optional 22% carbamide peroxide ampules for the at-home kit, they are also perioxide free.

SmileFusion has been creating teeth whitening products infused with Viocon since 2009. Coming soon to the product line are fluoride varnish, fluoride gel, and chlorhexidine. All products are made in the United States and marketed internationally. Their website provides easy access to their clinical research in addition to many testimonials from users. In addition you can request a complimentary sample of SmileFusion prophy paste when you visit their website at www.smilefusion.co. (it really is .co, not .com)

Weighted Calming Blanket

A weighted blanket can calm and relax a person similar to that of a hug, and who doesn't like a hug? Studies have shown that deep pressure touch -- the type of proprioceptive input generated from a weighted blanket -- releases serotonin in the brain. As you know serotonin is that neurotransmitter in the brain that creates a feeling of calm within our nervous system. Therefore, using a weighted blanket during dental procedures, may help to calm and relax patients while promoting stress relief by triggering the release of
serotonin.1

Weighted blankets have been shown to help those suffering from depression, anxiety, aggression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, autism, Rett syndrome, Asperger's syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and restless leg syndrome by increasing the levels of serotonin. You can visit www.nasmhpd.org (the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors' website) and type in "weighted blankets" for access to more clinical information.

I also read that weighted blankets are great for improving the quality and length of sleep, especially in children who are very restless or hyperactive. Even adults have reported mproved sleep when using a weighted blanket. I think I might give one a try myself!

These blankets are available from a number of different websites in a variety of different sizes, fabric choices, and weights. Searching for weighted blankets online will give you some options. These blankets are machine washable and dryable. Some manufacturers offer custom fabric and sizes. Visit www.mosaicweightedblankets.com, www.weightedblanketsplus.com, or www.rehabmart.com for more information.

Lip Clear Bandage

Although cold sores can be a bother year round, it seems that during cold and flu season we see more of them. For your next outbreak, or for your patients who suffer from cold sores, try Lip Clear Bandage by Quantum Health Professionals. You may already be familiar with their other products, OraMoist, Canker Cover and Lip Clear Lysine+ Ointment.

Lip Clear Bandage is an invisible cold sore bandage. This clear, protective, hydrocolloid bandage is applied directly to the cold sore. It adheres easily and protects the sore from irritants and contaminants. Makeup can be applied directly over the bandage to help conceal the sore during healing. According to the manufacturer, Lip Clear Bandage promotes faster blister healing. These products are available at most drug stores.
