Pure Newtron Piezo by Acteon Satelec

Introduced last August in Europe and this month in the United States, the Pure Newtron piezo scaler comes in two models and offers some unique features.

The Newtron P5 (without a reservoir) and Newtron P5XS (with a reservoir) both have a unique tabletop design with a beautiful, flat glass surface. The removable power and irrigation dials make it easy to clean the unit and maintain infection control standards. The handpiece and the silicone handpiece holder can also be removed for autoclaving.

The power dial is illuminated and color-coded with a green, yellow, blue, and orange glow (see Figure 1) progressively as power is increased. There are over 70 color-coded tips, which correspond to the colors of the intended power setting for that specific tip. Tips are available for a wide range of procedures including prophylaxis, periodontal, endodontic, prosthetic, and restorative treatments.

These units also feature a new style hand piece, the Newtron Slim B.LED. Exclusive to Acteon is the B. LED technology that is built into the handpiece and works with F.L.A.G., a unique fluorescing disclosing solution. F.L.A.G. can be applied directly to the teeth with a microbrush for use with the P5 model or diluted in the tank of the P5XS model. Under the blue LED light in the handpiece, the disclosing solution causes the plaque to fluoresce making it completely visible (see Figure 2). According to the manufacturer, the F.L.A.G. solution will not stain teeth or gums, and it rinses off easily with water.

Additionally, both units have the patented Acteon Satelec Cruise Control technology, which regulates the frequency and amplitude of the tip for optimum management of the handpiece and patient comfort. When the tip encounters resistance, the power is adjusted in real time (28-36 kHz), maximizing efficiency. This feedback effect helps ensure patient comfort by requiring only a light touch when adapting the tip to the tooth, which in turn reduces operator fatigue and increases tactile sensitivity.

The Newtron P5XS is also available with a Bluetooth option allowing the clinician to change the settings remotely using their smartphone or tablet. Apps are available for Android and Apple devices.

According to the manufacturer, these units deliver "superior ultrasonic clinical treatment with less user fatigue, decreased chair time and greater patient comfort." For more information, visit www.pure-newtron.com, or for a demonstration, visit www.acteonusa.com.

Preventech's Vella Fluoride Varnish

Recently, I had an opportunity to spend some time with Bill Berry, owner of Preventive Technologies, Inc., otherwise known as Preventech. What caught my attention immediately was his passion for the dental hygiene profession. Since inception in 1994, Preventech's focus has been on high quality, reasonably priced products used for preventive procedures. In fact, you're probably familiar with the "runs like metal" Pivot Disposable Prophy Angles, which are also available as latex free, as well as the company's Next non-splatter prophy paste.

You may be less familiar with Vella, Preventech's 5% sodium fluoride varnish with xylitol (see Figure 3). The single-use packet has twice as much material as you need to treat the entire mouth. This varnish is super thin and brushes on easily. The 2.0 ultra-brush has twice as many bristles as other brands. There's no need to worry about a completely dry field; Vella is hydrophilic. In fact, we applied it sitting around a conference table. It was that easy.

Vella will not set up on the brush. It remains pliable, giving you ample time to do a thorough full-mouth application. The fluoride uptake is fast as it disperses throughout the saliva for up to 12 hours. Although Vella has xylitol, its inclusion is as a sweetener rather than an active ingredient.

Preventech is an enthusiastic supporter of dental hygiene programs and activities worldwide. In addition, all of Preventech's products and all components of their products are made in the United States. Check the company out, download coupons, and order samples at www.preventech.com. When you visit the website, you can also get the name and contact information of your local Preventech rep.
