Plaque HD Toothpaste
Plaque HD is a unique toothpaste, using patented Targetol technology to identify plaque build-up on teeth. The teal color in the disclosing agents in the toothpaste turn plaque into a green color. The intent, of course, is to remind the patient to continue brushing until all the "teal colored" plaque has been removed, which, according to the manufacturer, takes about two minutes. This FDA-registered toothpaste contains annatto (Bixa orellana) seed extract dye, plus FD&C Blue No. 1, which gives the toothpaste a teal green color that adheres to plaque.
Independent studies conducted in the orthodontic department at University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry show that patients who used Plaque HD had four times as much plaque removal when compared to patients who used standard toothpaste. Participants in the independent studies were separated into two groups, with one group brushing with standard toothpaste and the second group brushing with Plaque HD. The presence of plaque on tooth surfaces was visualized by plaque-bound fluorescein, photographed, and digitally quantified to calculate the percentage of remaining plaque.
