RCC Spotlight: Kari Carter-Cherelus, RDH

June 28, 2023
Kari Carter-Cherelus, RDH, knew she wasn't alone in dealing with burnout. She wrote a book to help other hygienists and now regularly shares how she overcame her struggles.

Kari Carter-Cherelus, RDH, DA, began her career as a dental assistant before graduating from hygiene school in 2005. But, like so many, she reached a point in her career where she felt burned out. After much introspection, Kari recovered and wrote the book The Ultimate Guide to Dental Hygienist Burnout. She now speaks regularly to help hygienists who are currently suffering and feel hopeless or stuck.

Kari believes that hygienists can rekindle their enthusiasm for their career through diversification. She speaks from experience. In addition to working clinically a half day each week in a general practice, Kari is a consultant, author, coach, public speaker, and career counselor. Throughout her career she has worked in public health, private practice, and corporate dentistry.

On her social media platforms, Kari discusses how to prevent and recover from burnout. She discusses the importance of advocating for ourselves so we become empowered to bring about positive changes within our profession. She also discusses the importance of working in a supportive work environment and practicing a positive mindset.

When she’s not busy with dental-related activities, Kari enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family. She also loves going to the beach, museums, cultural festivals, concerts, and watching movies. She practices what she preaches by making sure to take care of her own needs. That can mean going for a jog, a chiropractic treatment, or talking with someone.

Kari’s future goals are to become an instructor at a dental hygiene school and to continue to deliver CE courses to her colleagues. She also wants to conduct more workshops to assist offices in facilitating better communication within the team so everyone feels supported.
