The proverbial "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" statement has never been more relevant than it is in 21st century management of diseases of the periodontium. As prevalence trends identify increasing levels of gingival and periodontal diseases across our communities, dentistry is called upon to develop a deeper [pun intended] consideration for disease management and control. With new data emerging, dentistry is beginning to understand that management of periodontal diseases extends beyond biofilm disruption extends via mechanical removal and is well supported through host modulation therapies aimed to optimize immune support.
Join periodontal hygienist Katrina Sanders, MEd, BSDH, RDH, RF, as she discusses how to put down the hammer, reconsider the "nails" we once saw in treating diseases of the periodontium, and critically evaluate the options within the research ‘toolkit’ that permit us to ‘construct’ an optimal care plan for patients experiencing periodontal disease.
Learning Objective: *Review causative elements contributing to the polymicrobial complex diseases of the periodontium *Discuss gold standard trends in periodontal disease management *Discover emerging data in the use of probiotics within host modulation therapy for managing periodontal diseases
