Question: I have a working interview for a great position! I’m a bit nervous and of course I want to do well and give them a good impression. What do you recommend to help me prepare, calm my nerves, and present myself in the best way possible?

Answer from Kimberly Augustus, BA, RDH: First of all, congrats on landing a working interview! Working interviews can feel intimidating, but they’re really an opportunity for both you and the dental team to see if you’re the right fit. Here are some tips to help you feel confident and prepared.

1. Arrive early: Plan to be there 15 to 20 minutes ahead of your start time. This gives you a buffer for any unexpected delays and demonstrates that you’re reliable.

2. Dress the part: Wear clean, professional scrubs (I’m a fan of black or navy) and comfortable shoes. Be sure you bring your loupes and light if you have one. I’ve heard that some offices do not have overhead lights!

3. Bring your essentials: Have your license and CPR card with you just in case. When I was a new grad, I always brought my favorite instruments with me. Even if the office provides instruments, having your own can be a comfort. For me, it was a Nevi and Barnhart 5/6.

4. Ask about the office workflow: When you arrive, ask the front desk team or lead hygienist to walk you through the day’s schedule. This shows initiative and helps you mentally prepare for each patient. Ask if there is one specific contact person you should go to with questions. This way this person will expect you throughout the day and you won’t feel like you;re inconveniencing someone.

5. Take notes: Keep a small notebook in your pocket to jot down tips, names, and computer software information. This is especially helpful if you’re temping or interviewing in multiple offices.

6. Be friendly and flexible: Smile, introduce yourself to every team member, and be willing to help with small tasks if you have downtime, such as stocking rooms, helping the assistant, and whatever else the team may need.

7. Watch and learn: Pay attention to how the doctor communicates with patients, how the team interacts, and how they handle scheduling. This can give you valuable insight into whether the office is a good fit.

8. Stay calm if things go sideways: Not every appointment runs smoothly. If a patient is late or there’s a hiccup with the schedule, stay calm and roll with it. Dental teams notice when you handle stress gracefully.

9. Ask questions at the end of the day: Before you leave, thank everyone for having you and ask about next steps. This shows you’re engaged and interested.

10. Reflect on the day: On your drive home or later that evening, jot down how you felt in the office. Did you feel supported, rushed, welcome? These notes will help you decide if this is the right environment for you.

Remember that this working interview isn’t just about them evaluating you. It’s also your chance to see if the office aligns with your values, pace, and communication style.

You’ve got this! Walk in with confidence and let them see the amazing hygienist you’re becoming. But remember: if the office doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t the right fit for you.
