A day of sadness
2 Irene Woodall, RDH’s senior editor throughout the first decade, suffered an aneurysm in early 2003, which critically limited her contributions to the profession she loved. Although the magazine reprinted her “Commentary” through May 1995, her last original column appeared in the February 1993 issue. The ADHA established a scholarship in her name later in the year.
“What’s out there”
3 In the February 1993 issue, a three-page survey stated, “RDH thought readers would want to see ‘what’s out there’ in private practice compensation,” beginning the magazine’s current generation of salary surveys. 751 readers responded to the first one, “snail-mailing” their answers. In 2005, readers either e-mailed, mailed, or went online to answer a one-page survey.
Happy birthday, Dental Hygienists!
4 October 1993 marked the 80th anniversary of the dental hygiene profession, and RDH helped celebrate by devoting the cover and an article inside to the profession’s historical milestones.

5 Periodically, RDH will turn to an artist for the design of a cover. We noticed two covers (May and July) were designed by artist Mary Ahern in 1993. We were trying to remember: Was there a national trend toward red hair that year, or did the artist forget some hygienists are blonde or brunette?
