U.S. companies expand in Dubai

June 1, 2009
The Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) was once again chosen by the U.S. Department of Commerce to sponsor a Certified Trade Fair at the AEEDC Dubai dental meeting in Dubai, UAE, in 2009.

The Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) was once again chosen by the U.S. Department of Commerce to sponsor a Certified Trade Fair at the AEEDC Dubai dental meeting in Dubai, UAE, in 2009. In its effort to bring dentists, auxiliaries, distributors, and other dental product buyers to New York City to increase sales opportunities, the GNYDM successfully partnered with the U.S. Department of Commerce to draw the attention of U.S. exporters to this region.

AEEDC Dubai is the largest international dental convention in the Middle East. With more than 80,000 dentists in the Middle East, AEEDC Dubai has been steadily growing and become known as the leading dental industry event in the region.

The 49 U.S. companies attending the meeting in March of this year made the U.S. presence the largest international pavilion at the event, surpassing representatives from Germany, Brazil, Korea, Japan, China, Italy, and Switzerland. The figures from AEEDC report sales of approximately $300 million, 20,000 trade visitors from 113 countries, 6,000 professional conference delegates, official representation from 44 country dental departments of ministries of health, and 700 exhibitors from 65 countries.

“In this global economy, the demand for U.S. products is tremendous,” says Dr. Robert Edwab, GNYDM’s executive director. “Dentists know we produce the best materials, technology, and equipment in the world for the practice of dentistry.”

Working closely with Principal Commercial Officer Robert Dunn, Commercial Specialist Minila Mathews in Dubai, and Senior International Trade Specialist, International Buyer Program, U.S. Department of Commerce, and Global Trade Program Carol Rudman in Washington, a morning reception was held with the region’s potential buyers and distributors. This was followed by a walking tour of each of the U.S. companies so each could introduce itself and describe its products. The program was very successful.

H. H. Sheik Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance, and President of the Dubai Health Authority, not only cut the opening ribbon to begin the meeting (Dr. Edwab on the left), but also visited the GNYDM booth to personally thank the GNYDM and U.S. Department of Commerce representatives for making this program so successful. He invited the group to repeat this success in 2010. Dr. Edwab assured H. H. Sheik Hamdan that the GNYDM would apply again for the opportunity to expand this partnership between the U.S. dental industry and Dubai.

H. H. Sheik Hamdan personally toured the meeting and visited many of the U.S. companies. Accompanying H. H. Sheik Hamdan was (second from left to right) Mr. Paul Stuphin, Consul General of the U.S. Embassy, Dr. Robert Edwab, and Mr. Abdul Salam Al Madani, executive chairman of AEEDC Dubai and Index Holding.

During the AEEDC event, the sixth Arab-Asian Dental Scientific Meeting was held on March 11. Dr. Edwab participated in this partnership to help improve the scientific relations between Arab and Asian countries. The meeting benefitted the dental communities of these two regions.

AEEDC Chairman Abdul Salam Al Madani stated, “The meeting has become the center of dental trade for the Middle East, Asian, and African countries.” He appreciates the support from the Greater New York Dental Meeting and the U.S. Department of Commerce. “This partnership that has developed over the last few years has helped expand sales and export opportunities for many U.S. companies.” He hopes his close relationship with the GNYDM fosters opportunities for U.S. companies and continued growth of U.S. exports.
