RDH Community Connections (RCC) was organized in 2019. It’s a program designed to identify and connect with dental hygienists who have attracted lots of followers on some of the primary social media platforms.
Each month, RDH magazine takes the opportunity to introduce you to one of these members so you can understand their passion, platforms, and learn how to connect with them. We also share articles written by RCC members on the benefits, tips, and tricks of building your social media presence.
Most recently we asked Andrew Johnston, half of A Tale of Two Hygienists podcast, what doors have opened since becoming a part of RCC. He said, “The list of doors that have opened for me is long. This, right here, being part of the RCC Influencer team and the great partnership with RDH magazine/Endeavor Business Media is one of the highlights. I was part of the Crest Smile Council and most recently part of the Cellerant Best of Class Hygiene Awards selection committee. Doors have opened for me to have meetings with the world’s leading experts in dentistry and leaders at major manufacturing companies.”
The RCC program is sponsored by Patterson Dental and each year the company hosts a reception for RCC members and UOR attendees. This year they will host the “RDH Glow in the Dark Party” on Wednesday evening, July 20, at RDH Under One Roof. Attendance is limited so be sure to register so you can dance under the black lights and meet the RCC members.

If you want to build your social media presence, this is the group you want to learn from. Many of them have valuable lessons to share and social media has assisted them in building their futures. I asked Sonja Dunbar what the greatest benefit of building her social media presence has been. She said, “It’s made the world seem like a smaller place, mainly during the COVID shutdown. I have connected with people worldwide who I would not have had the opportunity to meet without social media.” In addition, she and Melissa Turner became friends through Facebook and are now business partners who have created the National Mobile Teledentistry Conference, which is held each March.
Networking is a powerful tool that has positive benefits for the dental community, where opportunity can come knocking, but unfortunately has some negative circumstances as well. Many of the RCC members have said it’s important to be cautious in how you approach your social media branding. One member said to be careful because you never know who’s watching your behavior.
Come meet the RCC members and enjoy much more at the 2022 RDH Under One Roof. I hope to see you there, where the networking begins.
