By Maria Perno Goldie, RDH, MS

Do you feel at a loss about how to expand your dental hygiene career? At RDH Under One Roof, you can meet with mentors and like-minded hygienists to discuss how to make your career outside clinical practice a reality.

The RDH Under One Roof Conference is scheduled for July 28-30 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. A special session titled, "Evolve your Dental Hygiene Career," is scheduled for the afternoon of July 27, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.

Have you ever considered using your dental hygiene skills in a setting other than clinical dental hygiene? Have you deliberated on how to become a speaker, educator, researcher, or to begin a career in public health? This special session will focus on how to acquire or refine the skills and knowledge instrumental in career planning, and illustrate how you already have the tools to evolve your dental hygiene career.

With the assistance of the RDH Under One Roof advisory committee, a program of mentorship was tailored to give dental hygienists the support and skills enhancement they need.

Some of the topics discussed at the "Evolve your Dental Hygiene Career" special session include:

  • Sales
  • Building your professional portfolio for career advancement and validation of your professional competencies
  • Crafting the creativity code for your future
  • Working in a medical office
  • Myofunctional therapy as a career for dental hygienists
  • Overcoming mediocrity and embracing change for increased career options

The interactive workshop, where participants can develop relationships with more experienced or more knowledgeable individuals in the different roles and settings of dental hygiene, requires additional pre-registration. It is not part of the RDH Under One Roof tuition, and the fee for the special session is $65.

The panelists include Lillian Caperila, RDH, MS; Catherine Draper, RDH, MS; Dorothy Garlough, RDH, MPA; Maria Perno Goldie, RDH, MS; JoAnne Gurenlian, RDH, PhD; Linda Meeuwenberg, RDH, MA; and Jackie Sanders, RDH, MBA.

The panelists will deliver presentations on how they initiated transitions with their careers. The four-hour special session includes one-on-one mentoring discussions with attendees.

You already have the tools for evolving your dental hygiene career. We invite you to discover how to develop yourself and your career within the dental hygiene industry by reigniting your passion and finding a new exciting path.
