Old leadership vs. modern leadership: The energy our profession needs
Key Highlights
- Leadership in dental hygiene is shifting from hierarchy and titles to influence, collaboration, and everyday impact.
- Modern leaders empower others, encourage innovation, and create environments where all team members feel confident contributing.
- Every hygienist can lead—through mentorship, advocacy, and small daily actions that move the profession forward.
Leadership in dental hygiene is changing. And honestly, that is a good thing.
Early in my career I believed leadership was something that happened later. I thought you needed years of experience or a formal title before your voice truly mattered.
Over time I realized something important. Some of the systems we work within only improve when someone is willing to ask questions and challenge the way things have always been done.
I have personally found myself in moments where I needed to respectfully question old approaches and advocate for better solutions for patients and the profession. Those moments taught me that leadership is not about waiting for permission; it’s about having the courage to help move things forward.
The profession is evolving. The way we lead must evolve with it.
Modern leadership is not about control. It is about influence, collaboration, and empowerment. The next generation of hygienists has the opportunity to bring a new kind of energy to our profession.
And we need it.
The old model of leadership
Traditional leadership often looked like hierarchy. The leader directed the team, and the team followed.
In many workplaces, decisions were made by a small group of people, and information moved in one direction. Questioning systems was not always encouraged, and new professionals sometimes felt like they needed to wait years before their ideas were welcomed.
This structure created order, but it also created limits.
Young hygienists often felt hesitant to speak up. Innovation moved slowly. Many talented clinicians underestimated their ability to lead because they believed leadership only came with a title.
But leadership has never truly been about titles.
The shift toward modern leadership
Today the most effective leaders in health care are not focused on authority. They are focused on impact.
Modern leadership asks different questions:
- How can we improve patient care?
- How can we support each other as professionals?
- How can we create environments where hygienists thrive?
Leadership today is less about directing people and more about inspiring them.
It is about creating a culture where ideas are welcomed, growth is encouraged, and every team member feels empowered to contribute.
This shift is powerful because leadership becomes something we practice every day, not something we wait to be given.
Leadership without a title
One of the most important things new hygienists should understand is that leadership does not require a formal role.
Leadership shows up in everyday moments inside the operatory, the office, and the profession. It often looks like:
- Mentoring a student who is nervous about their first patient
- Sharing evidence-based knowledge with a teammate who wants to improve their clinical care
- Advocating for preventive treatment that will truly benefit a patient
- Supporting a colleague who may be feeling overwhelmed or burnt out
- Getting involved with your professional association or local study clubs
- Encouraging fellow hygienists to grow their confidence and voice in the profession
Every hygienist has influence. The moment you choose to use that influence to improve the profession, you are leading.
The energy our profession needs
One of the most exciting things happening in dental hygiene right now is the growth of community.
Hygienists are connecting through podcasts, study clubs, conferences, and professional organizations. We are sharing knowledge, supporting each other, and creating spaces where new voices can be heard.
This shift is helping move our profession away from gatekeeping and toward collaboration.
Instead of asking who the leader is, we are beginning to ask how we can lead together.
That mindset creates momentum. It encourages creativity. It allows hygienists to see themselves as contributors to the profession rather than just participants in it.
And that energy is exactly what dental hygiene needs right now.
A message to new hygienists
If you are entering the profession today, do not underestimate the impact you can have.
You do not need decades of experience to make a difference. You do not need a leadership title to influence others.
What you need is curiosity, courage, and a commitment to growth:
- Ask thoughtful questions.
- Share what you learn.
- Support the people around you.
- Stay engaged in the profession.
Leadership often begins with small moments that build over time. A conversation that encourages someone. An idea that improves patient care. A willingness to step forward when others hesitate.
Those moments shape the future of our profession.
Moving the profession forward
Dental hygiene has always been rooted in prevention, education, and care. As leaders we can extend that same mindset to how we support each other.
The future of leadership in dental hygiene will not be defined only by hierarchy. It will be defined by collaboration, mentorship, and the willingness to grow together.
When hygienists empower one another, the entire profession becomes stronger.
The next generation of hygienists is bringing fresh ideas, new perspectives, and a powerful sense of purpose.
That energy is not something to hold back.
It is exactly what the profession needs.
The future of dental hygiene will not be built by waiting for permission. It will be built by hygienists who choose to lead.
