This time, the subject was volunteerism, and apparently dental hygienists are very giving of their time ? 53 percent told pollsters that they currently volunteer for community outreach programs.

The statistics indicate:

* More than 11 percent give up to eight hours of their personal time each month to be volunteers.

* 54 percent have donated time for child-specific oral health initiatives.

* 30 percent have volunteered for oral health initiatives for the elderly.

* 22 percent have volunteered for the special needs population.

The survey was conducted among 535 practicing hygienists who attended the ADHA annual session in Atlanta in June.
