April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, a time when all health-care providers work together to screen and educate their patients. When was the last time you honed your skills and confirmed you were doing everything possible to provide quality extra- and intraoral exams? When I recently visited my physician for a wellness exam, I was most impressed with the extensive extra- and intraoral exam I received. It was a confirmation that some medical professionals are listening and working with us to diagnose oral cancer.

Susan Cotten, BSDH, RDH, OMT, is an oral cancer coach, speaker, and writer. She was recognized for her achievements in oral cancer awareness as one of the 2018 Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction recipients.

During the past four years her focus has gained momentum as she lectures across the country on a topic that changed her life. She is the owner of Oral Cancer Consulting, she developed the Cotten Method, a system that increases confidence in oral cancer screening, and she aids in reducing dental practice liability. Susan is a consultant with Alliance for HPV Free Colorado, and a board member and oral cancer screening coordinator for the Colorado Mission of Mercy.

To make sure you are doing everything possible to screen your patients, Susan has created a screening guide to help with early detection based on the four science-based pillars of screening from the Cotten Method.

You can download it here. You can print and laminate it to have in the operatory or share with patients to take home.
