Taking diagnostic radiographs isn't just about pushing a button; it's about gathering the information needed to make confident clinical decisions. Even experienced dental hygienists occasionally encounter overlapped contacts, cone cuts, or missing anatomy, especially when working with challenging patients. Fortunately, a few simple adjustments can dramatically improve image quality while reducing the need for retakes. Here are five radiographic hacks you can start using today.

No. 1: Slow down before you position

Many radiographic errors happen before the sensor ever enters the patient's mouth. Take a few extra seconds to evaluate the patient's anatomy. Is the palate shallow or deep? Are there mandibular tori? Limited opening? A strong gag reflex? Looking ahead allows you to anticipate positioning challenges instead of reacting to them.

Before exposing the image, ask yourself one question: Can I see the entire tooth and surrounding structures if I take the image right now? Those few seconds often prevent several minutes of retakes.

No. 2: Align the sensor before you align the tubehead

When contacts overlap, it’s tempting to blame tubehead angulation. More often, the problem begins with sensor placement. Instead of centering the sensor on the arch, position it parallel with the long axis of the teeth you're trying to capture. Once the receptor is properly aligned, bringing the aiming ring and tubehead into position becomes much easier. Think of the sensor as your foundation. If it's positioned correctly, everything else has a much better chance of falling into place.

No. 3: Use cotton rolls as positioning aids

Cotton rolls aren't just for saliva control. Placing one between the bite block and opposing teeth can help stabilize the receptor, improve patient comfort, and keep the sensor more parallel to the teeth—especially when imaging patients with narrow arches, missing teeth, or uneven occlusion. They're inexpensive, readily available, and can make a surprisingly big difference in both patient comfort and image quality.

No. 4: Coach the patient like a partner

Patients often want to help—but they don't know how. Rather than saying, "Bite down," give simple, specific instructions. For example:

  • "Close slowly until I tell you to stop."
  • "Keep your tongue relaxed."
  • "Hold very still for just a few seconds."
  • “That’s perfect. Three more to go.”

Calm coaching reduces movement, decreases anxiety, and often makes difficult radiographs much easier to obtain. It also makes the patient feel included and considered, which builds trust and rapport.

No. 5: Take advantage of positioning devices

Most practices have products that can be used to hold the x-ray sensor in its proper place for the perfect diagnostic image. Unfortunately, some clinicians either don’t utilize them or use them improperly. If using an assembled configuration like a ring system, every piece matters. Be sure that all parts are securely attached and be mindful of the device’s position in relation to anatomical landmarks and structures. When used correctly, images rarely need to be discarded and retaken.

Better images start with better habits

Excellent radiographs come from consistent habits practiced on every patient—not shortcuts. Small adjustments in sensor placement, patient communication, and positioning can significantly improve diagnostic quality while minimizing retakes and unnecessary radiation exposure. Over time, these simple techniques become second nature, making radiographic appointments smoother for both you and your patients.

The best radiographic "hack" isn't a secret trick at all. It's intentionally refining the small details that lead to consistently excellent images.
