Ongoing battle to curb tobacco use

Congratulations to Lorraine Kowalski (October 1997 issue) for her work with ASSIST (Americans Stop Smoking Intervention Study) program in New Jersey. I found it most interesting to read how she went about targeting certain groups (young and poor), hopefully ahead of the tobacco companies, and how she sets realistic goals - education being the key factor.

Dear RDH:

Congratulations to Lorraine Kowalski (October 1997 issue) for her work with ASSIST (Americans Stop Smoking Intervention Study) program in New Jersey. I found it most interesting to read how she went about targeting certain groups (young and poor), hopefully ahead of the tobacco companies, and how she sets realistic goals - education being the key factor.

In Massachusetts, we do similar work with ASSIST. This year`s American Cancer Society`s Great American Smokeout seemed to be more widespread within the dental community. Let`s keep it going all year as devoted health professionals. We must for our patients` sakes!
