Dr. David Johnson returns to the podcast to share what changed—professionally and personally—when he moved from private practice (and a brief stint in corporate dentistry) to serving patients at Wind River Cares on the Wind River Reservation. With David Torres and Jessica Atkinson, he unpacks how a prevention-focused model, strong team dynamics, and a community-health-center pace can reshape both patient outcomes and provider fulfillment.

The conversation also gets candid about ego in dentistry, the real value of hygienists in prevention, and how listening to your team can elevate clinical care and the patient experience. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a “more patients, less meaning” loop, this episode offers a grounded look at what purpose can look like in practice—without pretending the business realities aren’t real.
