Treatment for adult periodontitis

Astra Pharmaceuticals, L.P. announces the first biodegradable chlorhexidine delivery system as adjunctive therapy to scaling and root-planing in the treatment of adult periodontitis.

PerioChip® is a small chip that is inserted directly into periodontal pockets 5 mm or greater in depth after scaling and root-planing. It takes less than one minute to insert, and remains in place, releasing chlorhexidine (an antimicrobial) into the pocket. Treatment is complete after seven days. PerioChip® is fully bioabsorbable, and it may be inserted every three months if pockets remain 5 mm or greater.
